Abstract
Objective: It is known that acute hospitalization of the elderly can result in a significant decline in functional mobility and declined mobility may not recover after discharge. The aim of this study was to investigate the sociodemographic factors of the elderly patients that are related with functional mobility decline after discharge.

Methods: A total of 170 (92 male, 54.1%) elderly patients (Mean age, 73.4 ¡¾ 5.0) who were admitted from October 2016 to April 2017 in an acute hospital were included in this study. Patients were assessed for functional mobility at the time of admission, at discharge, 1-month and 3-months after discharge. Functional mobility was assessed with the questionnaire composed of 3 questions about transfer, walking and stair climbing. Patients were categorized into those that declined, maintained and improved in functional mobility. Sociodemographic factors were investigated and association with the changes of functional mobility after discharge were analyzed.

Results: Twenty one (12.4%), 127 (74.7%) and 22 (12.9%) patients had shown declined, maintained and improved mobility at 1 month after discharge. There was a significant difference in the monthly income and cognitive impairment in the declined group compared to the maintained group. Also, multiple regression analysis showed that monthly income and cognitive impairment were the factors affecting functional mobility decline after discharge.

Conclusion: This study showed that the elderly people who have low monthly income or cognitive impairment are likely to experience functional mobility decline after discharge. Therefore, in these patients, intervention after discharge to prevent functional mobility decline is especially needed.
